In the day and age of division, there are some powerful forces that can bring people together. Music, of course. Sports, quite certainly. The ongoing FIFA World Cup is an example of the power of sports that can break barriers and unite people.
Regardless of whether you call it “soccer” or “football”, one must agree that this sport is universally popular with fans in every corner of the world. People from all walks of life, across the globe, are feeling the excitement of the World Cup.
As I look at the teams that are participating in the World Cup, I can see players from many ethnic and religious backgrounds. They speak a variety of languages. Those cheering in the stadiums are spectators from numerous countries. There are those who are watching the matches on television and computer screens at home, across the planet. Football (or soccer) truly transcends socio-political lines, as well as time zones, to bring people together. It is a wonder!
Only 32 nations are competing to win the World Cup. Yet, fans from many other nations have traveled to Qatar for the World Cup. The entire world’s attention is now on this Middle Eastern country, where the most prestigious tournament is taking place.
There is a lesson to learn. We are, after all, humans. Regardless of where we are from, what language we speak, what faith we follow, what the color of our skin is, we are made by the same Creator, and we all have love in our hearts. We are united by the common desire for friendship and joy. We all wish to cheer and spread enthusiasm to those we encounter.
There’s no greater example of the strength of the bond of humanity than what we are experiencing as the world comes together during the FIFA World Cup. The power of sports can truly bring people together.
